Iran says 2 Greek ships held over maritime violations

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) said that the country has confiscated two Greek oil tankers in the Persian Gulf waters because of “maritime violations”.

The PMO issued a statement on Saturday, a day after the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) seized the two Greek vessels.

“Two Greek ships have been impounded for now and the issue is under investigation based on evidence and documents. The necessary legal measures will be taken after the documents are completed,” the statement said.

The PMO dismissed reports that crews of the vessels have been detained, saying that they are “safe and sound” and are on board the ships, being protected in accordance with international laws and offered required services.

The organization stressed that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a member of the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, is committed to its obligations toward all sailors, especially those who are its guests.
